Not patterns and colour. Accounts describe watching scenes from their own life, and the word everyone reaches for is dreaming. That word turns out to have a measurable basis: in rats, ibogaine produces waking brain activity whose signature matches REM sleep, and it does not produce the behavioural signature that classic psychedelics do.
People arrive at this question expecting the answer to be a description of patterns. It is not, and the reason is pharmacological rather than poetic.
Three kinds of vision, not one
The largest measurement of the experience asked 499 people what had happened to them and found seven statistically distinct dimensions. Three of them are visual, and they separate.

That these come apart statistically is the finding. Someone can have a great deal of narrative content and almost no alteration of ordinary sight, and two accounts that sound contradictory can both be accurate descriptions.
The instrument exists because the standard psychedelic questionnaires failed to capture the distinctive dream-like effects. Somebody had to build a new scale because the old ones did not fit.
The 499 were recruited across two treatment programmes run by a for-profit provider in Tijuana, as they came, and two of the paper’s authors work there.
It is the largest measurement in existence and it measures one clinic’s clientele. We apply that disclosure to every study on this site.
Why “dream” is not just a metaphor
This is the most interesting result on the page and it comes from rats.
Researchers recorded EEG in rats given ibogaine and compared the waking brain activity to their own sleep recordings. Ibogaine induced gamma oscillations of larger power than normal waking, but less coherent and less complex. Their conclusion, verbatim: this profile of gamma activity compares to that of natural REM sleep.
So an animal that is awake, on ibogaine, has brain activity resembling the state in which dreaming happens.
Every first-hand account reaches for the word oneiric or the phrase waking dream. That vocabulary has been circulating since the 1960s on purely subjective grounds. It now has an electrophysiological correlate, in one species, from one laboratory.
This is a rat study and we are not going to overstate it. It has not been replicated in humans, and no polysomnography study of people on ibogaine exists. What it establishes is that the metaphor everybody uses points at something measurable.
What it is not
The clearest evidence that this is not an LSD-type experience is also behavioural, and also from rats.
Classic psychedelics act mainly at the 5-HT2A serotonin receptor, and in rats that action produces a specific and reliable behaviour called the head shake response. It is the standard animal readout for a classic hallucinogen.
Ibogaine does not modify it.
That single negative result explains more about the visual character than any description could. Ibogaine is not working through the receptor that generates psychedelic visuals, so it does not generate psychedelic visuals. How ibogaine works sets out what it does act on, and how unresolved that remains.
The shape of it
One word in the literature does a lot of work. A study of 44 people treated in Mexico and New Zealand describes ibogaine’s strong oneiric action promoting cyclic visions leading to confronting realisations involving remorse and regret for participants’ actions towards others.
Cyclic. Not a rise and a fade, but material that returns. That matches the common account of being shown something repeatedly until it is understood, and it is quite unlike the arc of a psilocybin session.
The same study found 43 per cent met criteria for a complete mystical experience on a standard scale, in more than five of seven domains.
The part that decides how much you get
Two people of the same weight given the same milligrams per kilogram do not receive the same exposure.
Ibogaine is cleared by one liver enzyme whose activity varies about thirty-sevenfold between people on genetic grounds, and that genotype is almost never measured beforehand. Noribogaine covers that in detail.
So the reports you read describing an overwhelming visionary night and the reports describing almost nothing may be describing the same dose in two different bodies.
The honest caution about meaning
People find these visions extraordinarily meaningful, and the research records that faithfully.
One study found that people who rated the experience as more profound reported greater improvement. The intensity rating was collected after treatment, alongside the outcome, which is a correlation between two self-reports given at the same moment. It cannot distinguish the visions causing the improvement from a person who feels better rating everything more highly.
We say that not to diminish anyone’s experience but because the site’s job is to be exact about what has been shown. What ibogaine feels like covers the whole arc, and ibogaine and the heart covers the part that produces no sensation at all.
