Iboga is grown from fresh seed or from cuttings. Germination is slow and irregular, taking from a few weeks to a few months, and improves considerably if the seed is scarified first. Once the seed coat dries out the seedling struggles to emerge, so stored seed performs badly. The juvenile period lasts five to six years.

People searching for iboga seeds are usually met by vendors. The botanical record is more useful and less flattering, and most of it comes from a single careful monograph by a Gabonese botanist.

Germination

Propagation is by fresh seed or by cuttings. From PROTA’s account, four things matter.

Germination is slow and irregular, ranging from a few weeks to a few months. Scarifying the seed before sowing increases the rate considerably, though it is rarely done in home gardens. After a few months the seed coat dries out, making it difficult for the seedling to emerge. And seedlings need shade.

Germination is epigeal, meaning the cotyledons are carried above ground, and they are leafy and rounded. Seedlings can be moved to a final position after two or three months, once the root is twice the length of the stem.

Cuttings are faster, by a lot

Cuttings of about twenty-five centimetres, one centimetre thick, root easily in humid soil. PROTA records that such cuttings flower after four months.

Against a five to six year juvenile period from seed, that is a different order of timescale, and it explains why cultivation projects propagate vegetatively. The plant also regenerates by forming shoots from the trunk. Tissue culture works.

How long until there is anything to harvest

A seedling grows in flushes and reaches about sixty centimetres in three years. The juvenile period lasts five to six years. Fruits take five to six months to mature, and flowering occurs almost year-round with a peak between September and February.

The figure circulating online, that iboga takes up to thirty years to mature and yields a single gram of ibogaine, does not survive contact with any of this. It appears to come from misreading a claim about how much root bark a twenty to thirty year old plant can carry.

It is already farmed

The idea that iboga cannot be cultivated, and that wild harvest is therefore unavoidable, is not true and has not been for some time.

PROTA recorded in 2006 that the plant is commonly grown in home gardens, that it grows fast once established and needs little maintenance beyond protection from fire, and that it is cultivated in several West African countries including Côte d’Ivoire, well outside its native range.

Since then, plantations have been reported at scale. Journalism from 2023 describes one operation in Ghana holding forty thousand trees across around seventy hectares and shipping internationally, and thirteen village associations in Gabon planting more than twenty-four thousand trees across fourteen sites.

Why that does not settle the conservation question

Cultivation relieves pressure on wild stands. It does not, by itself, return anything to the communities the knowledge came from, and a plantation outside Gabon can do the first while doing none of the second.

That distinction is the subject of biopiracy and the Nagoya Protocol, and it is the reason this page treats cultivation as a partial answer rather than a solution.

Legal note, because it catches people out: Gabon suspended iboga export by order in February 2019, and a decree of May 2026 now regulates access, use, research, processing and sale across the chain. Growing the plant elsewhere and moving material out of Gabon are separate questions with separate answers.
